Description:

The planting of the May tree or the tree of joy is one of the oldest and most typical events in Brussels. This festival has its roots in the many medieval legends from the olden days. The cortège leaves in front of the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée, rue des Sables, (around 2 pm). The tree is part of this cortège which includes the Giants of Brussels, the "Roue de la fortune" and a cavalcade headed by a Charles V. They march to the Grand Place and then return to the corner of the Rue des Sables with the Rue des Marais. The tree must be planted before 5 pm! The Meyboom festivities continue until late at night. This famous event has been organized since 1213 and celebrates the Brussels victory on the inhabitants of Louvain.
